LOP 34 Bolus Head

Bolus Head   The lookout post no. 34 is located near the ruins of the old Bolus Head barracks. The barracks were built during the Napoleonic Wars to monitor the Irish coast. The Skellig Islands lie within sight of the headland, eight miles away.
In reference to the Napoleonic Wars and the sweeping view across the Atlantic, Théodore Géricault's painting ‘The Raft of the Medusa’ was chosen for this light art installation. The painting refers to a shipwreck during the Napoleonic Wars. In addition, the painting was used for the cover of The Pogues' 1985 album ‘Rum Sodomy and the Lash’. At dawn, the painting blended harmoniously with the light of the surrounding dawn.
